Even in a moderate earthquake, cabinets will open, pictures will fall off the wall, and there is a risk that heavy furniture will shift or topple. This guide to straps, glues and hangers can help you prepare your home for the next quake.
There are no guarantees on any of these products, but they're clearly better than no action. Take care when securing these products to walls or cabinets: the weak point is likely to be the attachment. Screws should penetrate deeply into solid wood (for older homes it may be helpful to soap the screws, so they go in cleanly and deeply).
