Finding a quiet check valve for a sump pumpGuide Started By b.n. on November 2014 Last Updated on November 2014 | Contributions | Comments
Does your sump pump make a thumping sound when it shuts off? Your sump pump has a check valve, meant to prevent water from flowing back downhill to the sump. The sound is the water hammering on the valve.
Fortunately a few vendors produce quiet valves, this guide will help you find one.
Most check valves are cemented in place. You'll need basic plumbing skills to change a check valve. Take care as most pump vendors specify that a small 1/8" hole be drilled in the pipe between the pump and the check valve. Take care not to block this hole or your pump could become "air locked" and not operate.
