Half Hour Family Board GamesGuide Started By FilterJ... on November 2013 Last Updated on December 2013 | 5 Contributions | Comments
Our family is drawn to board games of moderate (or higher) complexity. Unfortunately, most of them take an hour or more to play, which leaves Friday night through Sunday afternoon as the only possible playing time.
However, there are a few relatively complex games that can be squeezed into a half hour time slot after dinner. A few things to note about such games:
- The first few times you play one of these games will take longer as players get used to the rules and specific game elements such as cards.
- Any game can take longer if one or more players takes a long time to think ("analysis paralysis" or AP).
- Playing Time shown includes setup/cleanup time - but one person can set up while the rest of the family does chores, so the effective playing time drops to 30 minutes or less.
- The games with random setup elements occasionaly have setups that lead to game lengths significantly below or above indicated Playing Time.
Our family's weeknight games of choice are Dominion and Race for the Galaxy, which both usually take 30 minutes or less to play, particularly if we simply leave the game out on a table between plays (matters much more for Dominion). But there's plenty of other games that belong on this list, which will gradually grow over time.
