Great "Gateway Games" to Get People to Play More Board GamesGuide Started By FilterJ... on September 2013 Last Updated on February 2015 | 7 Contributions | Comments
Gateway games have simple rules that are easy to teach to non-gamers in order to attract new players into boardgaming. These games are so fun that, for some, they will act as a "gateway" to more complex games and/or gaming as a hobby. They are fun to play even for those who don't end up going down the path of increasingly complex or strategic games. The rest of this article defines "gateway" game and includes a purposely small set of quintessential gateway games.
What is a Gateway Game?
- simple rules
- playing time less than 90 minutes
- little down time (waiting for other players to complete their turns)
- good replay value
- nice game components
- features attractive to all ages
What Games Belong on This List (And How did I Choose Them)?
Any game that fits the above definition and has a track record of getting people more interested in gaming belongs in this gallery. I have personally played most of these games many times with friends and family. If you search leading board gaming sites such as board game geek you'll discover that several of these games are on almost every gamer's short list as great "gateway games" to introduce people to gaming and you'll see that all of these games are highly rated.
I started this list with just 6 games but may add additional games (and brief descriptions) based on comments/suggestions and further research. I'm taking a "quality over quantity" approach of only adding games that are rated highly and widely perceived as being great gateway games.
