Verizon Network Plan Options for Infrequent UsersGuide Started By b.n. on May 2013 Last Updated on February 2015 | 7 Contributions | Comments
Here is a guide with options for people with basic needs, looking for service on the Verizon network.
A bargain on old spectrum
Verizon is moving to a high speed network based on "LTE" technology. They have a lot of capacity on their older (and excellent) "3G" network, and it is available at bargain prices from both Verizon (in the form of prepaid) and from other companies that resell time on the Verizon network*.
Watch out for tricky rules on how money added to accounts expires. Also take care on plans with data support: you can very quickly rack up large charges by watching videos or downloading software.
iPhones, Android and Blackberry
In general Android phones will "just work' on any carrier. iPhones require some setup. And Blackberry devices, which require special support from the carrier, are only going to fully work on Verizon itself.
* These companies are known as "Mobile Virtual Network Operators" or MVNOs.
